What to Ask About Jewelry Materials Before You Buy
Questions to ask about wood, crystal, metal, coatings, fit and supporting evidence before choosing a jewelry design or gift.
Still Knot Editorial / 29 October 2026
Ask about the exact product
Start with a product code and selected variant. Broad shop descriptions, a photograph or a generic certificate do not establish what a particular piece contains. Ask the seller to identify the composition, finish and dimensions of the exact item being quoted, and to explain any difference between the title, specification table and selected option.
Wood and bead directions
For a wood-look bracelet, ask for the actual wood or seed identity and whether the beads are dyed, fragranced, joined, filled or treated with oil or wax. For a crystal-look or stone-look bead, request the actual mineral or manufactured material and disclosed treatments. A visual impression is not a material test, and a poetic product name should not replace the composition statement.
Metals, posts and surface finishes
Ask about the base metal and the surface layer separately. For earrings, the post and decorative body may need separate descriptions. For a ring, request the inner dimensions and any actual adjustment range. Do not infer a hypoallergenic, waterproof, sterling-silver or gold-content claim from color or a generic product image.
Match evidence to the SKU
If material or testing information is available, ask which exact product, variant or batch it covers, what was tested and when. A document needs to be relevant to the claim being made. Personal inspection can reveal visible finish or assembly issues, but a short home wear test does not replace a relevant material or laboratory assessment.
Keep the story and the facts together
Jewelry can carry a personal memory or cultural story while still being described plainly. Still Knot’s private collection separates third-party reference photos, original AI styling visuals and supplier details awaiting confirmation. Before accepting an order, actual materials, sample appearance, fit, price, delivery and returns need to be clear. We do not promise healing, luck or sacred provenance.Read our current collection status ↗See an example of a ring design reference ↗Explore the full private edit ↗← Back to the journal
